BAPTISM (CHRISTENING)

If video does not play, see note at bottom of page

Anointing with oil

The water in the font

The Baptism

Receiving a candle

First each person who is to be christened is anointed with holy oil.

When children are christened GODPARENTS make promises on their behalf. They undertake to bring up the child according to Christian teaching. Adults who are christened make the promises for themselves

Water is poured into the font and blessed by the priest ready for the baptism.

The Holy Water is put three times over the forehead "in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (the three persons of the one God).

A candle is given to each person who has been christened as a sign that Jesus the Light of the World has come into their life. They have "entered into the kingdom of heaven"!

To become a full member of the Church they will be confirmed by the Bishop. That means accepting the Baptismal Vows for themselves.
